How Can You Reduce the Amount of Motor Vehicle Points on Your License?

New Jersey law N.J.S.A. 39:5-30.9. allows a person with points on their NJ driver's license to reduce the number of points as follows:

  1. Passage of Time - Points are reduced at the rate of three (3) points for each 12 consecutive months in which a person has not committed any motor vehicle violation either resulting in the assessment of points or in the suspension of driving privileges.
  2. Attend a License Improvement Course - Points can be reduced at the rate of three (3) points where a driver attends and satisfactorily completes an approved license improvement course. You cannot take more than one course every (2) years.
  3. Attend a Vehicle Defensive Driving Course - Points recorded against a licensee shall also be reduced by two (2) points if the person attends and satisfactorily completes an approved motor vehicle defensive driving course. You cannot take more than one course every (5) years.

No point totals shall be reduced below zero. Computation of the time periods used in granting point reduction credits shall in all cases be based upon the respective dates of commission of the offenses for which the licensee was convicted and assessed points.
